Will gene-editing technology change the world?

Last week, Chinese scientist Jiankui He announced that he had edited the genes of twin girls using CRISPR technology to make them resistant to HIV. The technique he used—germline editing—ensures that not only will the change affect the twins, but also any future descendants of the girls. That is, he has permanently altered the genes of this family. The news rocked the science and ethics communities, raising questions about whether he actually accomplished what he claims to have accomplished, whether it was ethical, and what it means for the future of genetic research and bioethics.

I spoke with The Big Story Podcast about the story. Jordan Heath-Rawlings asked some great questions and I offered some thoughts on what I think some of the key issues are and will be in the coming years.

Listen here and tell me what you think.
